We've had what we thought was a decent knife set for years but when I opened this my wife was ooo-ing and ahh-ing and went right to work on some veggies. They arrive nice and sharp so that combined with the good weight meant it took almost no pressure for them to basically fall right through the raw broccoli. By comparison our other set was so light it felt like it was made of plastic and took actual pressure to get it to cut. This was even after a purposeful sharpening. I think the Calphalon is the perfect weight. Even then, the balance is right at the top of the handle where your pointer finger lies so fatigue shouldn't be a problem. While I'm used to 8 steak knives this nice set of four is a good round number that lets the block be just the right size and fit in the limited space we have to work with. Speaking of the block; so good to have a real wood block that doesn't reveal particle board underneath when you poke it. The ceramic rollers to automatically sharpen (right side only) are genius and something that everyone should be implementing. It means every time you slide a blade in it is being sharpened without even thinking. At first it seems all slots should have the sharpeners but think about it, it's be useless on the serrated edge and you use the tip-end of a steak knife but it would end up getting only the opposite end.

My wife spends a lot of time cooking and she's thrilled so that's the best endorsement I can give right there. She loves how the sleek the set looks and commented on the Santoku's good feel in the hand and how easy it was to use. While we thought we liked rubber grips the solid feel works good and means it'll stay looking good after many washes. Great to have a dedicated spot for the shears too. Really nothing not to like.

Customer Review of the Product( What's this? )
I have slowly invested in some J.A. Henkel knives over the years so when I was offered these I was doubtful they could improve up on my Henkels. Boy was I wrong. Seriously, they are SO much better than the other knives I had, I was super blown away with how sharp and HEAVY they were compared to my others.

First, the "auto" sharpened knives: you get a good, solid chef's knife. This thing is HEAVY and really nice, and has a sharpening slot. The Santoku knife is a bit awkward for chopping veggies, if you ask me (I prefer the chef's) but it is great for chopping up herbs and just as a backup knife if my chef one is dirty. It chops through raw meat like nothing, I couldn't believe how it chopped up a pork loin into chops like it was butter. The paring knife has a great shape, and super sharp. All three of the above knives have sharpening stones; so they stay super sharp. So far I've found that to work well, I use these every day and they are still super sharp after a month of use.

On the left you have the four steak knives, the serrated knife, and the kitchen snips. The snips are nice, I have even used them butchering and they can really handle just about anything, very high quality. The steak knives are differently shaped compared to most steak knives. Very bulky. But they really do an awesome job, I have to admit. I am getting hooked. And the serrated knife is my favorite. I guess I am unconventional. But I love this thing for veggies, slicing bread (man, does it get a "store" bread cut on a good loaf of Panera bread!) and anything in between. It's honestly my go-to knife for a lot of stuff. I love it!

The block is SOLID and heavy, and gorgeous. So gorgeous. Really a beautiful wood, almost a red cedar look to it. The quality of the knives is just amazing, as I said above, they can slice through raw meat like it's butter, and the WEIGHT of these knives makes it sooo nice to chop with. Definitely love them, they are so much better than my Henkels.

And here is one of the best features: the NAMES of the knives are on the handle tips. I totally love that, it makes it easy to see at a glance which knife you want, and especially with the sharpening stones, you don't want to wear out your block pulling them out to see which knife it is.

I totally would recommend these, and now I have my new favorite brand of knives. They are definitely worth every little penny!
